Howdy everyone!

A few minutes ago the doors opened to the new Engineering Society located in the city of Crossings, just east of the Trader's Guild!

Stone carving exercises much of the core functionality present in the new system and a successful deployment and test will allow us to move forward with developing the remaining of systems. Please ask any questions you may have in the Lore folder and I will do my best to answer them.

A quick "Crafting for Dummies" guide can be found buy buying one of the Crafting Instruction books sold in the Society Hall, and reading its foreward. If you ever get lost in system snytax, try using ANALYZE on everything for feedback. The new CRAFT verb may also be helpful to gauge what you can learn, and remember you ASSEMBLE one ingredient WITH another. You can also ASK TALIA about TALIA for more instructions.

Oh, and before anyone asks - maker's marks, furniture carving, and the remainder of the image carving system weren't quite ready, but should be before too long.

Good luck!

Okay, to help answer some questions that people will have and have been answered, I'm coping over some stuff from Plat. Most is answers given by Gms(well Kodius)

Player: Will stone carving just use mech lore for the time being, or are you actually introducing the engineering skill when you put this in?
GM:For now it will use Mech Lore. The Mech split is waiting until we have one method to learn each master skill ready to go.

Furniture carving is on hold for a bit until the deeding system is finished. I didn't want to release both the crafting system and something that touched houses at the same time Tongue That is recipe for disaster haha!

The stone materials (blocks, slabs, etc) are intended to be used as ingredients for furniture. Like the raw stone boulders, they are quite heavy. This is why you can carve things on the ground, and assemble them out of hand.

When an ingredient says <pebble> it requires that size or larger. So you could use a small rock to make something requiring a pebble. We can probably add something to the instructions to make this more descriptive.

The stone weapon stats are heavily influenced by the quality of the work and the type of stone used. Don't forget they are stone, and stone won't generally be as good as forged goods.

I hope that clears some things up. Oh, and most of the carved items will appear a bit "simple". This is intended as the Artistry discipline will be responsible for adding further embellishment. An example would be taking "a granite war club" and turning it into "a polished war club engraved with the barbarian guild crest", or "an engraved war club adorned with two rows of square-cut emeralds", etc.

GM:We are putting the finishing touches on a mining system, but it still needs some messaging and to pass through QC. Once that is complete it will become much easier to train without breaking the bank. I would also like to adjust the shop to sell cheaper stone all around that folks can use to burn through training with.

GM:Yeah, you are on the right track. 5 Skills, 3 Disciplines under each skill for a total of 15 Disciplines.

Each Discipline will have ~30 techniques when finished.

900 skill gives 12 technique picks in a SKILL to be spent on any disciplines' techniques.

A Career gives up to an additional 12 in a specific Discipline, a Hobby 6 and the Guild Perk is 3 distributed as advocates see fit.

So a Barbarian with 900 skill and a Career in Weaponsmithing would have 12 picks in Weaponsmithing, 3 bonus Guild perk picks in Weaponsmithing, and 12 picks to be spent on any Discipline in the Forging skill. This yields a possible 27 out of 30 if they ignore Armorsmithing and Blacksmithing entirely.

Those look like all the factors which determine how well you make an item, at least with stone carving.

We are still working out where Woodworking, Bonecrafting, and Metalworking end up. Bone may go with stone in Carving, and Metal with Wood in Shaping, but we're not making any final decisions until those systems are farther along. I think the thief per picks are in Carving, so we'd naturally change those if we went down this route. It isn't as big a deal right now as you can still unlearn techniques.

I hope that clears things up for you!

GM:We'll have more information about enchanting after the Con. It is really cool, just not my place to divulge

I'm not sure if we could call it Lore 2.0, but Stonecarving is the first of the new Lore based creation systems. The system of skills, disciplines and techniques will apply to every system released here on out, and older systems like forging, tanning and alchemy will be rewritten and expanded upon to work inside the new mechanics. Mech lore will be split out into the 5 skills of Forging, Engineering, Outfitting, Alchemy and Enchanting once one system for learning each skill is released.

Actually you can never know 30 techniques from a crafting Discipline. You stop earning new techniques at 900 skill, at which point you'll have 12. The harder instructions will teach upwards of 1500 ranks and potentially require as many ranks to cap, but you'll not gain knowledge of new techniques past that point.

12 from skill
+ 12 from the career
+ 1 from the guild perk
= 25 possible technique picks out of an estimated 30.

Choosing your techniques in this manner means you won't know anything about Shaping or Tinkering, however. So if you then pick a Career in Shaping you'd get 12 more picks to spend there. The intent is to prevent people from fully mastering a Crafting discipline completely, and to further prevent someone from fully mastering a crafting skill completely.

Some people may forgo the improvement techniques (Proper Tool Care and Material Detailing for stonecarving) in order to master more items. Others might choose to specialize within a Discipline, forsaking stone carved weaponry in favor of stone carved furniture. The goal was to present everyone with some very hard choices to make, while ensuring everyone can find a niche from which to be productive.

While adjusting some things I added a CRAFT INFO option with answers to the more commonly asked questions.

Hobbies also give bonus techniques, but where a Career gives up to 12 the Hobby only gives up to 6. I am hesitant to list out the Guild Perks due to the chance they might yet change or be moved about. One less thing to keep updated now while things are in a state of flux.

Thanks for the feedback!

The goal is 30 techniques (or more) in a Discipline by the time all that Discipline's supporting systems are released. So Weaponsmithing will have 30 techniques. Armorsmithing will have 30 techniques. Blacksmithing will have 30 techniques.

By the time you have 900 skill, 12 technique picks for the Skill will be available.

Choosing a Career in a Discipline gives up to 12 additional technique picks to be spend on that Discipline's techniques. Essentially doubling how much you can learn.

Then with a guild perk you could have up to 3 more, resulting in 27 out of 30 techniques known. However, by going this route you've focused entirely on one Discipline ignoring the others.

This is why the choice of where to put your Career and Hobby are so important - it is just like joining a guild and will define what crafting job you excel at. Techniques provide the equivalent of the Barbarian forging bonus, and as such are extremely important if you wish to cap out the high end crafting instructions.

For now, techniques can be forgotten instantly for 10 platinum. Once the other systems start coming online, a timer will be introduced so forgetting techniques mirrors forgetting spell slots.

You should find that capped stone carved weapons range between just below store bought to just above store bought with a few exceptions like sling stones. The ultimate ranking will look something like wood < stone < iron < bronze < steel < rare metals. Roleplay value aside, stone carved weapons offer a cheap and easily replaced form of weaponry. They may also offer new paths for enchanting when that system comes out.

Skill - engineering
 Disc - tinkering
 Disc - shaping

Hope that helps!

Stone carving is now live in TF! As always, please let us know if anything seems out of order. It was a big rollout and touches a great many other systems!

Hello everyone. I rolled in a few changes to crafting experience and appreciate any feedback as you play with it.

1). Bonuses from techniques and other factors no longer penalize your learning. However, harder templates now award more experience per action. This should help alleviate playability concerns and still provide incentive for crafters to focus on those items near the top end of their skill.

2). Using the improper tool now correctly penalizes your experience award.

3). Across the board difficulty tiers have become a bit harder. If you know the proper technique and the Carving career you should see little difference. This was necessary to accomodate 600+ ranks a bit better.

4). Experience across the board should be a little bit better. This was a small tweak, I want to continue observing over the next few weeks and see how folks are doing.

5). I added a new stone mask item to make. This item is difficult, and should train better than the intricate items once folks are ready for them. Furniture and other items are still coming, I'm just experiencing that RL time crunch thing at the moment.

6). Completing an item now gives a considerable experience bonus.

To address Apu's concerns - I did extensive testing and with carving granite intricate items you should be able to mindlock mech lore without using scripts. I can't speak to the speed of doing so versus appraisal or other skills, but it is in line with what we want right now.

Please keep in mind that this is just the first round of tweaks. We've a long way to go before it is all perfect, so please holler if you see anything acting up.
